Author Interview with Lynn Pollaine Miclea

Today we welcome Lynn Pollaine Miclea.

Book ‘Em:  Tell us about you and your life outside of writing.

Lynn Miclea:  In addition to writing, I play the piano at senior and memory-care facilities, bringing them the music of their generation – Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Bobby Vinton, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Elvis, etc. It is so very rewarding to see these seniors respond and come alive when they hear the music that they grew up with and that meant so much to them.

I also am a Reiki master practitioner, which means that I tap into and channel universal life-force energy to anyone who needs or wants it to help promote healing, wellness, and wholeness. I love being able to help others in any way I can.

I also love being in nature, surrounded by trees, greenery, and fresh air – there is such a deep part of life that I connect with when I’m out in nature. It always refreshes me, renews me, and makes me feel both alive and at peace.

I am now retired and live in Southern California with my husband and two small dogs.

Book ‘Em:  Which books have you written? What are they about and why did you choose to write them? Do your books have a message? Are they fiction or nonfiction?

Lynn Miclea:  I have written two non-fiction memoirs and eight children’s books. The two memoirs are powerful, heart-felt stories about difficult experiences in my life. One is about our family’s experience with ALS (my mom had ALS), and one is about my journey through emergency open-heart surgery. The eight children’s books are sweet, uplifting animal stories about kindness, seeing the best in others, breaking through fears, believing in yourself, helping others, celebrating our differences, discovering the magnificence within all of us, and becoming more than you ever thought possible. My goal with these books is to help empower people and to help us love and feel good about who we are and where we are in life.

Here is a brief synopsis of each of my books.

RUTHIE: A Family’s Experience with ALS

A powerful and compassionate memoir about a woman’s experience with ALS. Dramatic and heart-wrenching as the author’s mother, an intelligent and beautiful woman, slowly loses the ability to speak and to eat as the disease progresses. The story includes volatile family interactions as one person who is in denial attempts to block the woman from getting the help she desperately needs. This is a personal view of this difficult illness, and the story brings you right into their lives and hearts. This book also gives advice and tips on helping people through this type of difficulty. It would greatly benefit anyone dealing with any type of progressive illness.

MENDING A HEART: A Journey Through Open-Heart Surgery

A gripping and powerful story of a journey through emergency open-heart surgery. Dramatic and riveting, the author experiences profound and debilitating weakness and shortness of breath, and the symptoms continue to get worse, as her condition deteriorates. This story is an inspirational journey of strength, determination, and self-reflection, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, as the reader is brought into the author’s private world. This is a true celebration of life – gripping and heartfelt, the story is empowering and offers many insights for those who face and deal with medical crises, and is a poignant reminder of what is truly important in our lives.

Book ‘Em:  Do you have a work in progress?

Lynn Miclea:  I am currently writing three non-fiction self-help books, based on my years of experience as a certified hypnotherapist, containing visualizations and meditations to help improve various areas of your life – these books are currently in the editing phase, and will be published in 2018. I am also currently writing one more children’s book in the Sammy-the-Dog series, and hope to write more children’s books after that. Down the road I plan on writing another memoir about my husband’s experiences under communism in Romania and his difficult journey to freedom.

Book ‘Em:  What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?

Lynn Miclea:  I think the most difficult book I wrote was the Ruthie book which is about my mom’s experience with ALS. What made it so difficult was reliving all the heart-wrenching moments of pain and frustration and all the struggles dealing with such a horrendous, debilitating disease. I cried through writing that book, but it felt so important to share her story. And I knew if the story didn’t move me and make me cry, how could it move my readers? So I kept it real and raw and painful, allowing the world to see what it was really like.

Book ‘Em:  What sort of research do you do for your work?

Lynn Miclea:  For the Ruthie memoir about ALS, I did extensive research into the background, causes, symptoms, progression, and treatment of ALS. For the Mending a Heart memoir about open-heart surgery, I did the same type of in-depth medical research about aortic stenosis, and I also researched detailed surgical information on valve replacement so that the information presented would be as accurate as possible.

Book ‘Em:  Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author that inspires you?

Lynn Miclea:  My favorite author is Dean Koontz. He writes action-suspense thrillers that grab me from the first sentence, and underneath all the intensity is a lot of joy, sensitivity, compassion, love for people, and humor that easily comes through. His work is exciting, thrilling, and genuinely touching, all at the same time. I also like Mitch Albom, James Patterson, and Robin Cook. I love action thrillers, sci-fi, medical dramas, beyond-life experiences, and memoirs that show how people have overcome adversity and challenges. I love books that have more complex layers, that show compassion for people, animals, and all of life, and which show respect and sensitivity for human frailty, difficulties, and life struggles. I think the authors who inspire me the most are Dean Koontz and Mitch Albom.

Book ‘Em:  Was there a person who encouraged you to write?

Lynn Miclea:  I think the person who encouraged me the most was my husband. Through all my doubts, fears, and insecurities, he always believed in me, and that really helped me keep going and want to write even more.

Book ‘Em:  What would you say are your strengths as an author?

Lynn Miclea:  I believe my strengths include a down-to-earth, casual style of writing that is easy to read, and a natural ability to bring a story to life and help people feel something as they read it. I also draw upon my own personal struggles in life, which have helped me have a great deal of compassion and sensitivity for the pain, fears, struggles, and self-doubt that we all deal with in our lives. I try to infuse all of that into my stories so that they will be more powerful and meaningful to the reader.

Book ‘Em:  How often do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

Lynn Miclea:  I usually do not write every day, and I do not follow a strict routine with writing – I basically write when I feel moved to do so. I have noticed that when I force myself, it does not flow as easily or come through as clearly. However, when it strikes me, it comes through urgently and powerfully, and I do my best writing at those times. There are times when I write every day, and times when I do not write for weeks at a time.

Book ‘Em:  Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

Lynn Miclea:  Five years from now I would love to have at least another five books published, possibly even more. As I am now retired, my goal at this point is to continue learning and growing, and writing and publishing more books. I hope that through my books and stories I can reach and help many people and add more joy and kindness to their lives and to the world. My goal is to help people become empowered and feel better about themselves and about life.

Book ‘Em:  If you could offer one piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

Lynn Miclea:  My best advice to aspiring authors is really three parts. First, read a lot and write a lot. Reading helps you know what you like and what you don’t, and it helps you learn to improve how to phrase, present, and describe things. Second, don’t compare yourself to others. Find your own voice, your own passion, your own style, and the things you want to write about. There will never be another person just like you, so be proud of who you are and develop your own unique style. And third, please use the services of a professional editor so that your work will be professional quality, which helps you be your best and more easily reflect what you are trying to say. You don’t want readers to get distracted by poor grammar or spelling errors or inconsistencies. A good editor is important.

Book ‘Em:  What would you consider the best compliment a reader could give your book?

Lynn Miclea:  That it moved them, deeply touched them, and made a difference in their lives – and that they would recommend it to others. And the best way someone could show that they really enjoyed any of my books is with a wonderful, heart-felt, 5-star review.
